Beach Side Property
Modest Mouse
Long Drive

“Wow!” said the broken Californian down
On the beach that used to be by the beach
Town hasn’t moved but’s getting closer, losing ground
Making better views and close relaxing sounds
Ground sure don’t like the way it’s treated so now
It’s moving back to the sea
Plan to hitch a ride with the river
Cuz deep down plumbing life is too cramped for me
I got wood legs and bow legs and no legs at all
Goddamn! Would you take a collect call?
Oh no, I don’t understand
I got poor eyes and sore eyes and no eyes at all
Goddamn! Would you like to take a fall?
No I don’t like this plan
It was a staple of brass tacks and waxed backs
A message left on the forehead of God
Sent sealed and signed by the saints who sang this song:
“We’re going union like they say
We’ll buy the congregation
Then one day, you’ll find us sitting
in your chairs with big ideas of stocks and shares.”

Duration : 0:7:0

I’ve got a serious question, Modest Mouse Fans, help me out. During this song.. IT breakdowns between 3:00 to 3:27 it sounds like a really old bass riff from an older song, like some song on the Devil Rejects soundtrack. Maybe lynard? Maybe Terry Reid? I’m not definite but I’m hoping i’m not the only one who finds a resemblance.

    dinosore gets it. …
dinosore gets it. This song is an absolute masterpiece that will never get the credit that it deserves. Hell, so is the overwhelming majority of MM’s work.

This and Cowboy Dan match perfectly. One speaks from the Earth and water’s point of view and the other from a man who’s just as affected by urbanization and the erosion of the natural beauty of Earth.

  17. dinosore9 Says:

    and eventually …
and eventually becomes a song about the desrtuction of morals through religion and the unions under capitalism… “a message left on the forehead of god”- because god couldnt see it. annd “we’re going union…big ideas of stocks and shares.” its a beautiful and amazing song, really.

  18. dinosore9 Says:

    this is probably …
this is probably the lyrical peak of modest mouse, in this song alone… its about the eroding of the earth. or how the earth is trying to kill itself because its sick of being used so sparringly. then it eventually leads to erosion of all things “poor eyes, sore eyes, no eyes”.

  19. dinosore9 Says:

    issac is a clever …
issac is a clever motherfucker. think about it… the whole album is only a long drive……. if you have nothing to think about. meaning you would gain nothing from it unless you were a person with somthing to think about. not to mention its the best driving music for long trips. the album, like most of their albums, is like a journey in itself.
